Why do most people send pink gifts for baby girls and blue gifts for baby boys? Was it always this way?The history of baby gifts is very interesting; people gave silver in the time of Paul Revere. But giving girls pink gifts and boys blue gifts is a new concept. All children were dressed alike until the twentieth century. Go to any museum and look at Gainsborough paintings or Renoir masterpieces and you will see baby painted in a white dress. In 1927, Time magazine printed a chart showing sex-appropriate colors for girls and boys according to leading U.S. stores. In Boston, Filene's told parents to dress boys in pink. So did Best & Co. in New York City, Halle's in Cleveland and Marshall Field in Chicago.

In the 40's things changed again and clothing companies decided to make blue the color of selection blue for boys and pink for girls and it has been that way until just recently. Lately there has been a big push for gender neutral baby presents especially if they are organic or ecofriendly. Orange has become a favorite color for baby blankets and towels as well as brown, gray and white. Lavender is a feminine alternate to pink and navy blue has always been a classic modern color for boys. No one has a problem with a blue blanket for a baby girl especially if it is embroidered in hot pink; but there still seems to be resistance to presents for baby boys in pink.
