Mommy Monday: Venessa Goldberg

Monday, August 1st, 2011
Today’s Mommy is Seattle mom Venessa Goldberg. She is a pastry-chef by trade and currently runs her own business called Infamous Pastries.  At home with her husband, Joe, young daughter and twin step-sons, Venessa is dedicated to eating locally–keeping chickens and growing a large porion of the family’s produce.
1. How long have you been a mom?
I’ve been a mom 9 months, and a step-mom for (officially) 1 ½ years.

2. What is your baby’s name?
My daughter’s name is Lillia Simone

3. What inspired this name?
We wanted a name that was sort of unique but not too out there. On my Mom’s side of  my family, the girls in my generation, as well as my only niece, all have names that end with an “a” so we took a name we liked–Lily–and gave it an “a” at the end. This also made it a little less common of a name. Simone came from my husband’s family. Ashkenazic Jews have a tradition to name new babies after family members that have passed, and so we took the “s” from a Great Grandmother Sara and chose a new name with her in mind. Simone is also the feminine variant of Simon, which is a common and meaningful Jewish boys’ name.

4. What is the cutest thing your kid has done this week?
Oh boy! That’s a tough question because I think everything is cute! We play on an urban grown-up kickball league, and she’s a total flirt at the games. We all have team waterbottles and she loves to drink out of them. My teammates all think it’s a hoot. She’s like our unofficial team mascot!

5. What is the product that you needed when your baby was six months old and under that surprised you the most?
We kind of went the way of “less is more” as far as baby stuff goes. The product I would say we used the most, before 6 months, that I never would have expected was probably the beaba baby food machine. Lillia decided she was ready for “solid” food sometime during her 4th month. I held her off on food until I could get a second-hand food mill so that I could make all of her food. I hadn’t planned on needing it so early!

6. How many bibs does your baby use in a day?
Just one. I tend to use the same bib for mealtimes for a day or two. For one thing, she’s not too terribly messy, and also, I have a pretty high tolerance for mess. I figure, it’s going to get filthy anyway, why not let it get really dirty. Less laundry for me. We don’t use bibs to catch drool from teething. She prefers not to wear them if she can get away with it, even at mealtimes.

7. What is the baby product that you cannot live without?
Our gDiapers. We love them! They’re great for at home because it’s just a cloth diaper with a few convenient features like velcro, and you don’t have to change every piece every time. And with the disposable/flushable/compostable liners for when we aren’t at home, it makes life pretty easy.

8. What is your baby’s favorite sleepy time companion?
The white noise machine. She sleeps much much better with it turned on. Especially when her brothers are here, because sometimes they forget that the baby is sleeping. Also, it lets us play music and have guests in the evenings without being too worried that every little sound will wake her. She never got too attached to a blanket or buddy–yet!

9.  How did you decorate the baby’s room? Did you have a theme? Second-hand gear? Is it just like the other spaces in your home?
It’s woodland themed. We moved into a new (to us, it’s really 100 years old) home when Lillia was just a few months old, and prior to that she slept in our bedroom. When we moved in I started putting her room together from ideas I saw here and there and it just kind of turned out woodland themed. It’s about half and half new vs. gently used. Most of the decorations are hand-made by me, to fit the theme. It’s been kinda fun!

10. What baby gift that you have received did you treasure the most?
My grandmother made a quilt for Lillia that we use every day. She called it the “drag around blanket” and intended for it to get some use. It’s definitely been through a lot in only 9 months!

11. What is the most practical baby gift you have received?
My mother-in-law recently purchased us a tray for the tripp trapp chair we bought second hand. We noticed that when we eat dinner at her grandparent’s house where they have a more traditional high chair, she eats a lot better because the finger foods are easier to reach. The tray has been great, even though it was a bit spendy. Thanks Grandma!

12. If you were recommending something for a friend to bring to someone’s baby shower what would it be?
Fun toys and board books. This is something we received almost none of, and it would have been great to have them around in the beginning instead of having to go out and buy everything as we needed it. Also, something for the new Mom!

Mommy Monday: Marcy Chartier

Monday, July 25th, 2011

We asked Monday’s Mom, Marcy Chartier, our Mommy Monday Big Dozen. Marcy and her husband Chip live in Seattle’s suburbs where they raise two precocious daughters. Marcy has been the Executive Director of Sammamish Rowing Association for five years. She attended Western Washington University where she rowed three years and received BAs in both English and Spanish. After graduating from Western, Marcy coached the WWU NCAA Women’s Novice team (2002-2003) and then moved to London where she earned her MA in Linguistics.

1. How long have you been a mom?

5 ¾ years (the ¾ is very important, according to local sources.)

2. What is your baby’s name?

My youngest daughter’s name is Violet.

3. What inspired this name?

We wanted something sort of unusual that would hold up to her older sister’s name (Octavia.)  Violet was the only one my husband and I agreed on, and we liked that it was different but not TOO odd.  Jennifer Garner had nothing to do with it, I swear.

4. What is the cutest thing your kid has done this week?

My daughter (22 months) is going around this week calling everyone a “nice guy.”  Her mom is a nice guy, the (female) cat is a nice guy and the clearly non-male checker at the supermarket is a “really nice guy.”

5. What is the product that you needed when your baby was six months old and under that surprised you the most?

One of those “hooter hider” things- honestly, I thought that breastfeeding in public would be fine with a blanket, but I HATED how it always slipped down, making me a playground flasher and covering my baby’s head.   Picture an increasingly angry infant, a sweaty, panicky mom and 30 offended park-goers.  Definitely loved the Hooter Hider once I got one!

6. How many bibs does your baby use in a day?

2-3 (usually one for each meal, but we re-use if we can.

7. What is the baby product that you cannot live without?

When my daughter was younger, it was definitely the Boppy and the Ergo baby carrier.  Also sleep, but I don’t think that’s officially a “product” yet.

8. What is your baby’s favorite sleepy time companion?

Her “ba” (blanket).

9.  How did you decorate the baby’s room? Did you have a theme? Second-hand gear? Is it just like the other spaces in your home?

We tried to go with primary colors for our first daughter, so as not to burden her impressionable mind with overly “girly” colors and themes.  However, when our second baby was born, the (shared) room had been somehow turned into an oasis of pink, purple and undeniably girly items.  It is definitely NOT like the other spaces in our house (my husband would protest too much, which would get annoying.)  We bought the crib second-hand, but invested in a nice changing table/dresser and bed for my eldest.

10. What baby gift that you have received did you treasure the most?

My sister-in-law gave the baby a delicate silver bracelet with her name engraved on it, which was very cool.

11. What is the most practical baby gift you have received?

Diapers.  And offers to babysit.

12. If you were recommending something for a friend to bring to someone’s baby shower what would it be?

Boppy, Ergo baby carrier, white noise machine, ear plugs (just kidding), Hooter Hider.

Mommy Monday: Krista Kenner

Krista Kenner is a 31 year old first time mom married to a graphic designer named Brian Lodis. Krista has a new job as Director of Marketing for up-and-coming fashion company, Dolce Vita, based in Seattle and NYC.  She, her husband, her daughter and their Maine Coon and Redbone Coonhound live in Seattle’s Nordic neighborhood, Ballard, a walkable oasis of mid-century modern homes near the Pacific Ocean.

1. How long have you been a mom?

7 months

2. What is your baby’s name?

It’s a secret! (Seriously, I don’t want people to start naming their kid what we named ours. I know that sounds conceited but it’s already happened once with someone Jenn knows!)

3. What inspired this name?

4. What is the cutest thing your kid has done this week?

She is trying to crawl.

5. What is the product that you needed when your baby was six months old and under that surprised you the most?

I never thought I’d let my house be taken over by baby furniture, but some of that stuff really makes life easier.

6. How many bibs does your baby use in a day?

Right now, 1-2.

7. What is the baby product that you cannot live without?

My Ergo carrier.

8. What is your baby’s favorite sleepy time companion?

A stuffed zebra!

9.  How did you decorate the baby’s room? Did you have a theme? Second-hand gear? Is it just like the other spaces in your home?

Animal themed… Our pets inspired hand painted murals. Cheap but cute crib…splurged on a dresser/change table because it will last forever.

10. What baby gift that you have received did you treasure the most?

Silver rattle that was my husband’s favorite when he was a baby.

11. What is the most practical baby gift you have received?

Boring stuff like car seat, stroller, etc.

12. If you were recommending something for a friend to bring to someone’s baby shower what would it be?

Mommy Monday: Chelsea Bell

Monday, July 4th, 2011

Happy Fourth of July, America!

Monday’s Mom! We caught up with Seattle mom Chelsea Bell.

An avid writer and foodie/crafting genius, 29-year-old Chelsea can be found in the urban environment of Capitol Hill where she is a full-time mom to her single  dashing daughter Bea. The duo frequent local cafes and parks while Dad Landon’s at work as an Elementary School Teacher.

1. How long have you been a mom?

20 months

2. What is your baby’s name?

Beatrice Shaolin Louise

3. What inspired this name?

The first name is my mother’s, the second is an homage to the Wu-Tang Clan, the third is just cute.

4. What is the cutest thing your kid has done this week?

The cutest thing was befriending a little girl at the park and walking around holding hands with her. My  favorite was when she pooped in the tub for the first time. I heard her dad yell, “Noooooooooooo!!!” all the way across the apartment and knew immediately what had happened.

5. What is the product that you needed when your baby was six months old and under that surprised you the most?

My Kindle. Those first few months are mostly just nursing and holding a sleeping baby, and it’s really hard to do either of those while holding a book open. E-readers only require one hand.

6. How many bibs does your baby use in a day?

Usually zero. Not because she is remotely tidy, I just always forget to put them on her before the damage begins.

7. What is the baby product that you cannot live without?

Teething necklace. We lost her first one during a teething period and the week wait for a new one was excruciating for all of us.

8. What is your baby’s favorite sleepy time companion?

Me.

9.  How did you decorate the baby’s room? Did you have a theme? Second-hand gear? Is it just like the other spaces in your home?

She’s still in our room so instead of having a space decorated for her, our entire space is decorated with her stuff.

10. What baby gift that you have received did you treasure the most?

My mom made her a beautiful quilt (her first try at quilting!).

11. What is the most practical baby gift you have received?

Desitin and baby powder.

12. If you were recommending something for a friend to bring to someone’s baby shower what would it be?

Teething necklace, Medela lanolin, Dr. Seuss board books. And a Kindle, if it’s, like, your sister or BFF.

Thanks Bea and Chelsea! Come back next Monday to see who the Mommy is and what she has to say about the most essential products in motherhood.

JeeYoung is a 31 year-old new first-time mom to a darling daughter. When not baking bagels from scratch and hanging out with her hubby in Seattle’s gorgeous and leafy Madison Valley neighborhood, JeeYoung is back to work as a key player at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture at the University of Washington. She enjoys exploring Seattle’s foodie landscape with her sister and cultivates a group of girlfriends who indulge in the occasional Karaoke marathon. We asked her our Namely Newborns Dozen.

1. How long have you been a mom?

11 months!

2. What is your baby’s name?

Alice Gilbert Dobbs

3. What inspired this name?

My grandmother’s name is Alice, Luke’s middle name is Gilbert, and well, the last name speaks for itself. My grandmother was a hilarious, irreverent, and wildly intelligent lady. She passed away a few years ago and I wanted to pass on her legacy to my daughter. Gilbert is the name of Luke’s (eds. note: the dad/husband) grandpa. If we have another child and it’s a boy, we plan to name him Diego Gilbert. All of kids will have Gilbert as their middle name. Kind of like the Korean tradition of having a generational name.

4. What is the cutest thing your kid has done this week?

She spun herself in circles while sitting on the floor, waving her hands, and yelling at the top of her lungs. I thought it was hilarious.

5. What is the product that you needed when your baby was six-months-old and under, that surprised you the most?

I needed soothies by Lansinoh – seriously. We used the Aden & Anais swaddle blankets religiously. So soft, so easy to use, and perfect for hot or cold weather.

6. How many bibs does your baby use in a day?

Ummm, about 7. She used to go through like 20 a day. We currently have 50 bibs on rotation at our house. It’s bib madness.

7. What is the baby product that you cannot live without?

I cannot live without her sleep sacks. We are using the light weight halo sleep sack since it’s warmer, but my favorite is the pamper sacks. I also love my Ergo and Babyhawk carriers. And I love my cloth diapers. We use Fuzzibunz, Flip System, Grovia, and indian prefolds.

8. What is your baby’s favorite sleepy time companion?

It used to be her lamby, but now it’s just her noise machine. We have the marpac sound conditioner. It’s awesome. I also love her kissaluv wool diaper cover. We cloth diaper, so the wool cover is a lifesaver at nighttime since she’s in the same diaper for 12 hours straight.

9.  How did you decorate the baby’s room? Did you have a theme? Second-hand gear? Is it just like the other spaces in your home?

We kind of did it willy nilly. Had a bunch of hand-me-downs, then bought a bunch of new stuff once the baby was born. I did choose green for her wall color b/c i always choose green. I don’t know why. Maybe because it’s a safe color? I’m not the most adventurous designer.

10. What baby gift that you have received did you treasure the most?

I love the quilt my mom made for Alice.

11. What is the most practical baby gift you have received?

Baby nail clippers.

12. If you were recommending something for a friend to bring to someone’s baby shower what would it be?

I’d recommend the Aiden & Anais swaddle blankets, some milkmakers cookies (delicious), or if they live somewhere chilly, a JJ Cole Bundle Me.

Tune in next Monday for another moms perspective on the Namely Newborns Mommy Monday Dozen!
