A cute monkey blanket for your little monkey

The long hot summer offers a lot of time for families to spend great days together for some cool fun.. Your local zoo is the perfect place for a fun filled family outing. It provides educational and entertaining experiences for kids twelve and under.. There’s plenty of parking, lots of family friendly food and a very helpful knowledgeable staff.

Before taking a very young child to a zoo , it is a good idea to prepare them for their first experience at the zoo. The first time they see a live animal or hear a lion roar came be very frightening. You want to make sure that your child gets the best possible experience the first time he visits a zoo.

Here are some tips.

  • Show them a video of animals.
  • Bring a stuffed animal or lovey with them to the zoo
  • Pretend to make animal noises and play animal games before the outing.

www.namelynewborns.com offers many stuffed animals, comfy cozies, crib or stroller blankets and security blankets in the shapes of lions, giraffes, monkeys and more. Play with the stuffed animal before taking the child into the zoo. Make sure that the blanket that has an embroidered or appliqued zoo animal accompanies the child to the zoo. Be sure to show him the blanket and compare it to the live animal. Most of all have fun and make sure your first visit is short and sweet and your baby will look forward to his next visit to the zoo.

Baby Blankets Are the Star at Baby Showers

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

A baby shower used to be an  a ladies party.  Maybe, the new dad came at the very end with a bouquet of flowers  for his mate. Now, more and more people are having a couples baby shower. The shower event is more like a giant cocktail party with hors douevres and drinks and , of course, presents for the new baby. The most popular gift at any baby shower is still a baby blanket. Sometimes, this baby shower has a unique purpose ; it is the place to announce the sex of the new baby and the presence of a baby blanket as part of the decoration has a deeper meaning.

There are clever ways that the baby’s sex is revealed to the friends and family at the party. Sometimes, the cake is rolled out, and the color of the cake indicates the baby’s sex. Sometimes, the favors are pink or blue. Sometimes there are  pink or blue booties on the table. Our favorite way to announce baby’s gender is to display baby’s first blanket. If the baby blanket is blue; then the baby is a boy and if the blanket is pink; of course, it is a girl.  Revealing baby’s gender at a baby shower gets more complicated if the mother is having twins. Then she needs to display two items in the appropriate colors.

If you are invited to a baby shower where the baby’s sex is still a secret, what do you bring as a gift? We still think at namelynewborns that some form of baby blanket is the best baby gift.

There are so many uses for blankets , that the new mom can never have enough. Babies need the following types of blankets.

Security blankets or blankees are available in many gender neutral designs with cute animal heads; lambs, bunnies, giraffes, elephants, ducks are all perfect for baby and don’t need to be pink or blue.

Swaddling blankets can be eco friendly in muslim and large enough to nurse baby or cover his stroller. They can be small and soft to lswaddle the baby at night or small enough to be rolled tightly to prop baby up so he will not roll over when he is placed on his back to sleep. Many popular patterns have jungle or bug themes and are totally gender neutral.

Tummy Time Blankets are usually large enough to provide a soft space for tummy time or to provide a germ free environment in the public bathroom when changing baby. Bright  primary colors are perfect for this type of blanket because this baby blanket  doesn’t have to match a crib or nursery. It’s only function is to be soft and practical.

Stroller Blankets should be no larger than 24 by 34 so that they don’t drag when you stroll baby. Most strollers are gray, black, orange, or blue . Buy a stroller blanket that will look sharp in these neutral strollers. These blankets can also be used in the carseat.

Crib Blankets are the one type of blanket that should really match the nursery. If you know the color of the room , try to find a blanket that matches. If the room color is a secret and you still want to buy a crib blanket ;here is our favorite tip. Hint: brown has become the new neutral and most nurseries are combinations of pink and brown for girls and blue and brown for boys. Also, you can never go wrong with a whitebaby  blanket.

Eight sleep tips for babies

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

Eight tips to help baby sleep. We suggest a soft plush toy for security at bedtime.

Baby Gund Huggy Buddies make great security blankets for bedtime.

Lack of sleep affects every minute of every day for every person in the family because lack of sleep isn’t just about being tired. Sleep has a role in everything your child does and how he feels – dawdling, temper tantrums, hyperactivity, growth, health, and even learning to tie his shoes and recite the ABCs. Sleep affects everything. The following ideas are of value to almost any sleeper, of any age. These tips can bring improvement not only in your child’s sleep, but also in her daytime mood and last, but not least – improvements in your own sleep and outlook as well.

#1 Maintain a consistent bedtime and awaking time.
Your child’s biological clock has a strong influence on her wakefulness and sleepiness. When you establish a set time for bedtime and wake up time you “set” your child’s clock so that it functions smoothly. Aim for an early bedtime and stick to it seven days a week for the most consistently positive results.

#2 Encourage regular daily naps.
Daily naps are important. An energetic child can find it difficult to go through the day without a rest break. A nap-less child will often wake up cheerful and become progressively fussier or hyper-alert as the day goes on. Also, the length and quality of naps affects night sleep – good naps equal better night sleep.

#3 Set your child’s biological clock.
Take advantage of your child’s biology so that he’s actually tired when bedtime arrives. Darkness causes an increase in the release of the body’s sleep hormone — the biological “stop” button. You can align your child’s sleepiness with bedtime by dimming the lights during the hour before bedtime. Exposing your child to morning light is pushing the “go” button in her brain – one that says, “Time to wake up and be active.” So keep your mornings bright!

#4 Develop a consistent bedtime routine.
Routines create security. A consistent, peaceful bedtiem routine allows your child to transition from the motion of the day to the tranquil state of sleep. An organized routine helps you coordinate the specifics: bath, pajamas, tooth-brushing. It helps you to function on auto-pilot at the time time when you are most tired and least creative. And a bedtime routine can be a lovely way to end each day by bonding with your child.

#5 Create a cozy sleep environment.
Where your child sleeps can be a key to quality sleep. Make certain the mattress is comfortable, the blankets are warm, the room temperature is right, pajamas are comfy, and the bedroom is welcoming. Add comforting pictures on the walls and stuffed animals nearby. Lots of kids enjoy having a small bedtime pet nearby for company – such as a fish or turtle.

#6 Provide the right nutrition.
Foods can affect energy level and sleepiness. Carbohydrates can have a calming effect on the body, while foods high in protein or sugar generate alertness, particularly when eaten alone. A few ideas for pre-bed snacks are: whole wheat toast and cheese, bagel and peanut butter, oatmeal with bananas, or yogurt, and low-sugar granola. Vitamin deficiencies due to unhealthy food choices can affect a child’s sleep. Provide your child with a daily assortment of healthy foods in three meals plus several snacks for health and good sleep.

#7 Help your child to be healthy and fit.
Many children don’t get enough daily physical activity. Too much TV watching and a lack of activity prevents good sleep. Children who get ample daily exercise fall asleep more quickly, sleep better, stay asleep longer, and wake up feeling refreshed. Avoid activity in the hour before bedtime though, since exercise can be stimulating – they’ll be jumping on the bed instead of sleeping in it!

#8 Teach your child how to relax.
Many children get in bed but aren’t sure what to do when they get there! It can help to follow a soothing pre-bed routine that creates sleepiness. A good pre-bed ritual is story time. A child who is listening to a parent read a bookor tell a tale will tend to lie still and listen. This quiet stillness allows him to become sleepy. Older children might enjoy listening to an audio book as they drift off to sleep.

The Mama Llama book series is a favorite baby time story.

Work with these eight ideas and you’ll see improvements in your child’s sleep, and in your sleep, too.

Did you Know that Swaddling Helps Baby Sleep?

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

Aiden & Anais prince swaddlers

Did you know that the most important thing for new babies is to sleep? It is also important for the new Mom to have a baby that sleeps alot so she can recover her strength. Scientific research has finally proven what Mothers have know for years. Swaddled babies sleep more peacefully and for longer periods of time than unswaddled babies.

So swaddling a baby should be a no brainer when it comes to how to treat a new baby. It’s equally important for babies and their parents.

The practice of swaddling is about 6,000 years old. Swaddling is about consistency . Incorporate swaddling into the bedtime ritual. First feed the baby, bathe the baby, swaddle your baby and then sing a lullaby or tell a story.  Repeat the same routine every night. Eventually, swaddling will become a sleep trigger for your baby.

Swaddling experts recommend that babies be swaddled in lightweight blankets to help reduce the risk of overheating. Full term babies can control their own temperatures as long as the outside temperature is normal, so there is no need for a heaving swaddling blankets.

Tips for swaddling:

1. Use a fabric that is slightly stretchable so that there is some give when you swaddle the baby. Too tight a swaddle can restrict baby’s movement  completely or even inhibit breathing.

2. Make sure that the swaddle blanket is tight enough to keep younger infants from escaping their wrap and getting tangled in loose bedding.

3. When swaddling babies, be sure to allow their legs to settle into a natural “frog” position with the legs bent at the knees, so their hips continue to develop properly..

4. Make sure the baby’s elbos are in a natural bent position when swaddling.

5. Use a blanket large enough preferably 44 by 44 inches to allow baby to be wrapped snuggly  and still have his arms and legs bently at comfortable, healthy angles.

6. Swaddled babies should never have their faces covered.

7. Swaddled babies should never be turned on their stomachs. Babies should always sleep on their backs even if unswaddled.

8. Some babies enjoy a half swaddle  so that they can draw their fists up to their mouthes and self- soothe by sucking.

Uninterrupted sleep is important for babies because it is during their sleeping hours that certain brain deveopment takes place. Another reason for swaddling is to help inhibit the Moro refelx which causes infants to jerk their handles or legs while sleeping. This is a very natural reflex , but it often wakes a baby up from a sound sleep. Swaddling helps decrease the startel reflex.

Swaddling helps mimic the natural safe environment of the womb. Don’t worry when you should stop swaddling. Your baby will let you know. He will wriggle out  his swaddle blanket on a regular  basis or complain when you try to swaddle him. This can happen anytime between 3 months and a year. Until then, enjoy swaddling, it is a time for both you and your baby to relax and enjoy being together.

Free Personalization on Baby Blankets

Three letter monogram in block

Blankets are the most popular baby gift. When you personalize a baby blanket, this gift becomes a treasured keepsake. At www.namelynewborns.com  we personalize all blankets over $30 free.

There are many ways of personalizing a blanket. You can add the baby’s first name in large block letters or you can embroider  a first and middle name in block or script. You can even add the birthdate and the babies birth weight and height at birth. This blanket becomes more than a loved blankee; it becomes a record of the most important event in the baby’s life – his birth.

It is very important that the embroidery thread is washable and that the embroidery font is large enough to be read. Ugly embroidery can ruin a beautiful blanket. For babies, we recommend using  a simple block or script that is thick enough to show up on even the plushest blankets.

A monogram is a very sophisticated way to personalize a baby blanket. The three letter monogram can be embroidered in block or script. If all of the initials are the same size, the initials are in the order of first name, middle name and then last name. Often, the last name is the middle initial and in this case, the middle initial is embroidered larger. A single letter of the baby’s first name is another  beautiful way of personalizing a blanket. It is very simple and elegant. Sending a  Monogrammed baby gifts shows that you spent extra time selecting a gift.

Some friends and family like to add a message on the blanket or a prayer.  Favorite messages include “welcome to the world”, and “with love from”( name of giver)This is a special addition to the blanket; remember to keep all messages short and if you choose a psalm or prayer, choose a short one. Sometimes, companies will add their logo to the blanket . Sometimes, special embroidered designs can be added to the blanket to make it extra special and totally original.

Blankets with embroidered names

Personalization can be expensive.  especially for twin gifts.Remember at www.namelynewborns.com , we personalize all blankets over $30 free.  Free personalization is a major savings when buying more than one blanket.

How To Clean Baby’s Favorite Plush Toy

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

You have finally found the perfect stuffed friend or security blanket for your newborn baby. He sleeps with it, clings to it in his stroller and carseat and lovingly bits on its ear or tail constantly.  Then – tragedy-”stuff happens”. The favorite plush toy is covered with ( you know what I am talking about). What do you do? If you were smart enough to buy a second back up security blanket or plush stuffed animal , it is a simple switch when the baby is sleeping to introduce the new product. But if there is no second one, all is not lost.

Most security blankets are washable. Wait unil your baby is sleeping and then substitute another soft security blanket while you throw this one in the wash. Distract baby when he awakes until the security dries.  Even easy going kids may suffer a melt down, while they stand by the washer or dryer waiting for their favorite friend to emerge unharmed.

Stuffed toys are another story. Do not wash them in the washing machine. Most of them cannot be thrown in the washer and dryer without ruining their softness and destroying their stuffing.

Minnie Mouse is a favorite stuffed toy

Here are the cleaning tips from the baby toy expert BABY GUND

Surface Wash Instructions: Many companies have a mild wash- Gund sells a Teddy Bear Bath

  • Do NOT immerse toy in water
  • Remove all accessories from stuffed toy
  • First test cleanser on small area of toy surface
  • With a clean cloth and tepid water, lightly blot affected area using mild
    detergent or Teddy Bear Bath
  • Repeat blotting using tepid water to rinse detergent from toy surface
  • In the folds of a clean towel, squeeze stuffed toy several times to remove
    excess moisture
  • Allow to air dry in the sun if possible
  • Once dry, stuffed toy surface may be fluffed and brushed
  • Repeat as necessary.

What is Our Favorite Baby Gift to Give?

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

The answer “to what is the most favorite  baby gift” is simple.A baby blanket is the most popular baby gift. Everyone wants to send the new baby his first blanket. A blanket is an extensive of the loving arms of parents and friends. Everyone wants the new baby to be swaddled or cuddled in a blanket that they have chosen.

It used to be easy to select the perfect baby blanket.

Blue for boys and pink for girls. Not so simple. Now we find that nurseries have unusal color schemes. Many Mom’s use sage green and accent the room with pink or blue. Yellow is no longer an option; it’s the neutral of long ago. The hip colors are orange and purple. So before you invest in an expensive baby blanket as a gift, check with the mom or grandmother about the nursery color. The Mom who has chosen a bright red and black  nursery  does not want a pink blanket.

Selecting a blanket for the stroller is even more complicated. I like to match or at least not conflict with the color of the carseat or stroller.  A neutral black or gray stroller is easy to find a beautiful blanket that will look compatible. But when the Mother chooses an orange or red stroller, watch out. Sometimes, the best solution is a white blanket. This is the only color that is never a mistake.

A baby can never have too many baby  blankets. They always need a spare when travelling or going to grandma’s. It is nice ot have an extra blanket to leave in the car near the carseat or the changing table. If the baby is young , it needs to be swaddled and propped up in the crib so that he sleeps on his back. Wet happens and worse and no one ever ones to be caught waiting for the blanket to dry in the wash .
